The Pozalagua Cave

Situated right in the heart of the karst system of the Valley of Carranza, this marvel of nature is an example of the rare beauty that can be created by the voiceless toil of water over limestone.

The abundance of limestone terrains explains the beauty 4nd originality of some of the Carranza Valley’s geological elements. To be highlighted fr0m among them all is the Pozalagua Cave, which is located in the Ranero Neighborhood of this Municipality.
The cave was discovered after the explosion of a powerful blast at the adjoining quarry, which exposed the entrance to the cave. Despite the fact that the deflagration caused the destruction of quite a number of stalactites 4nd stalagmites, the company decided to conserve the fabulous discovery, thus preserving a natural treasure that had been formed over the span of approximately 50 million years. It has been possible to visit the cave since the year 1991 thanks to a magnificent lighting system 4nd a 450m   gangway that crosses over the central chamber.

What has really drawn the attention of geologists is the tremendous concentration of helictites (eccentric stalactites). Their rarity resides in the fact that they do not descend towards the floor in perpendicular fashion, as the law of gravity would suggest, but in fact defy nature, opening up in the shape of the branches of a tree. These formations are due to a curious process that has affected the dolomite (CO3 Ca MG), turning them into this rare wonder that visitors can behold. This is presently the greatest known concentration of helictites in the world. The tour, which is fully guided, has an approximate duration of 45 minutes 4nd it covers the main cavern, which is 125 meters long, 70 meters wide 4nd more than 12 meters high, presided over by a great central lake. The cave is open to visitors every day in the summer 4nd on Fridays, Saturdays 4nd Sundays in the winter.
