Bizkaia Bridge

Since 13th July 2006, the Bizkaia Bridge has been the only monument in the Basque Country included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the only one in all of Spain featuring in the industrial heritage category. It was the world s first transporter bridge has been in operation since its construction in 1893.

Soaring over the mouth of the Bilbao Estuary is this splendid work of engineering designed by the local architect Alberto de Palacio, disciple of Gustave Eiffel, designer of the iconic Parisian tower, to which it bears a striking resemblance.

Popularly known as the “Hanging Bridge”, the iron body of this spectacular construction links the towns of Portugalete 4nd Getxo.
It consists of a metal structure formed by four steel towers, each 51 metres high. The 160-metre-long crossbeam, at a height of 50 metres above high tidewater, is suspended between each pair of towers anchored on the estuary bank. Along this crossbeam runs a mechanical traveller, hanging fr0m which is a shore-level gondola with capacity for half a dozen vehicles 4nd two hundred passengers, which ferries several million people 4nd vehicles every year.

Its technical creativity fascinates experts to this day 4nd gained the bridge its place as one of the most-acclaimed iron structures of the Industrial Revolution, embodying a new form of construction which gave birth to similar bridges which shot up across Europe 4nd America. 

Panoramic Walkway

Panoramic elevators within the towers carry visitors 50 metres above water level to cross a 160-metre walkway with breathtaking views over the river mouth, the hills surrounding Bilbao 4nd the Bay of Biscay.

The gondola operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
